AI stands for Artificial Intelligence, and involves training machines to various degrees to perform and act intelligently.  This revolutionary technology has been in development for decades, but it was not until the launch of ChatGPT in 2022 that AI really broke through to the mainstream because of the ease of use and accessibility of the ChatGPT tool.  AI is meant to enable machines to perform tasks which would otherwise require human intelligence to perform.  This can include visual perception, speech recognition, complex decision making and problem solving.

AI helps machines to simulate human thinking, learning and adaptation to new unprogrammed situations, allowing machines to make decisions independently like a human employee would.  There are many different techniques and tools which taken together make up AI.  These include the development of LLMs (Large Language Models), Computer vision, Machine Learning, Natural language processing, and Robotics.

Key Aspects of AI:

  • Large Language Models (LLMs):
ChatGPT is an example of an LLM.  It is an AI trained on language to both understand written language, and also create understandable written language.  LLMs serve as an important computer to human interface to allow people to interact with AI in a very simple intuitive way, through typing simple written prompts into a computer chat window.
  • Computer Vision: Computer vision is exactly what it sounds like, and enables machines to take in data which a human would take in visually (such as images and videos), to be able to use that visual data to perform tasks and “understand” the visual data.  This includes tasks like object recognition & definition (i.e. The picture shown is of a Bananna), facial recognition, and scene understanding (i.e. a person is walking across a field next to a stream).  Computer Vision AI is critical for applications such as self-driving vehicles, automated surveillance systems, and medical image analysis.
  • Machine Learning: Just like a child, AI powered computers need to learn.  Unlike non-ai software which is programmed for specific conditions to know what to do, AI is “taught” through exposure to lots of data.  This allows the computer to “learn” from the data, and that learning continues after users start using it, making it better and better over time, improving performance.
  • Natural Language Processing (NLP):  Humans speak and write in many different ways and languages.  Helping a computer to understand what that language means, and if there is any meaning beyond the words is what NLP is about.  Understanding meaning, intent, sentiment and helping a machine to be able to summarize, process, and perform appropriate actions based on that language is what NLP enables AI to do.  When the computer needs to communicate with the user, it can also use NLP to put together a message to the user which is easy to understand.
  • Robotics: Robotic AI enables machines to interact with the physical world, whether other machines or people.  AI powered Robots can sense their surroundings and make decisions based on information and input then perform physical tasks without a programmer having to specifically tell the machine what to do.  This technology has applications from food service to manufacturing, construction, healthcare, logistics and exploration, among others.

Benefits of AI:

  • Enhanced Efficiency and Productivity: AI can increase operational efficiency by automating repetitive tasks and streamlining processes.  When human resources are freed from mundane activities, businesses can re-deploy them to focus on higher-value tasks which leads to increased overall productivity.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: By rapidly and automatically analyzing vast amounts of data, AI empowers organizations to extract value in real-time.  Data-driven decision making can speed up when data capture, processing and insights are automated, all while improving accuracy and providing a foundation for future rapid strategic planning changes to real-world conditions.
  • Personalized Customer Experiences: Tailored recommendations, Targeted marketing, improved customer service and loyalty are all outcomes that AI can drive in real time resulting in higher customer satisfaction.  Realizing the potential of 1:1 marketing at scale becomes achievable with AI driven marketing experiences.
  • Predictive & Prescriptive Analytics: KPIs, OKRs and company dashboards are important tools for modern business management, but they still reflect backwards-looking data.  AI can ingest not only the key metrics but their drivers, identify correlations and complex relationships, and then extrapolate to look forward and generate predictive analytics.  Further, by conducting What-if scenarios, and identifying changes which the company can make (Price changes, Inventory levels, etc) company systems can reach Prescriptive analytics levels and begin to help executives by telling them what they should consider doing based on the current conditions.  These capabilities help companies to anticipate customer behavior, market trends, required inventory levels, and mitigate their risks.
  • Innovation and Creativity: AI is becoming the core catalyst for innovation, by opening the door to intelligent applications, products and services.  AI is driving advancement in autonomous vehicles, smart home automation, healthcare, and business process automation.  Netflix took 3.5 years to reach 1 Million users.  Instagram took 2.5 months.  ChatGPT took 5 days.  AI has broken through, and AI innovation and creativity is exploding.

The Future of AI:

With mainstream AI use only just beginning and corporate use just starting to really gear up, there is still a lot of room for rapid growth.  With the pace of use and adoption continuing to grow rapidly, the impact of AI on all business sectors is expect to soar in the next few years.

The potential applications of AI span various realms, including healthcare, finance, manufacturing, education, entertainment, and more.

However, it is important to address the ethical implications and challenges associated with AI, such as privacy concerns, bias mitigation, and responsible governance. Balancing technological advancements with ethical considerations is crucial for the responsible and beneficial use of AI.
